well it has been some time since the last post… some personal issues took center stage for a few months but it looks like things are back on track. we took part in BETA spaces in november (bushwick exhibition triangle of alternative spaces) which is essentially an open studio tour showcasing curated group shows. we invited a few friends to take part in our show entitled ‘feast of martyrs’. we dubbed our loft ‘phoraspace’ and served red velvet cupcakes made by our friend lauren… yum! here are a few pics from the event…

so we went back up to my parent’s house… and came back with a whole slew of beets! we harvested both the classic red beets as well as some golden beets. here is the booty right from the soil and then we brought them home to brooklyn to use in a quick pickle. yum!

so those that know me are already aware of my aversion to the heat. i can’t stand being too hot - i’d pick a cool, damp, snowy cool day over a blistering hot one any day of the year. BUT this summer i have really been trying to give heat a chance… i think my appreciation for the sun has really been in trying to understand it and celebrate it’s virtues… like ok you can’t grow really amazing things without sun. and this summer it has all been about the garden fresh goodies… check out some more photos!

sadly the polar bear was added to the list of threatened species under the endangered species act on wednesday. the bears are losing their habitat in the arctic circle due to climate change. currently the estimated polar bear population is around 20,000, but by the year 2050 that number could be 1/3 of what it is today as the temperature rises and sea ice disappears. see the whole story on pbs.org…

gosh… sometimes it’s just all or nothing around here - 2 months with no posts and now i feel i’ve got loads to share. so if you’re looking for the most amazing baguette in the city you have to go to almondine bakery in dumbo (brooklyn) at 85 water st. to be exact - it’s across the street from jacques torres’ chocolate and apparently he is a partner with fellow pastry chef herve poussot. it is an authentic french bakery with lovely tarts and things but their bread is really what makes it worth the trip. these baguettes are seasoned perfectly with a solid crunch on the exterior and soft lovely flesh on the interior… i could eat a whole loaf by myself with just unsalted butter and sea salt. um yum.

the first LEED residences in brooklyn are having an open house this weekend. (LEED certification provides independent, third-party verification that a building project is environmentally responsible, profitable and a healthy place to live and work - www.usgbc.org). on feb. 23 + 24 (this sat/sun) from 11am to 6pm and also on march 1 + 2 (sat/sun) from 11am to 6pm the building will be open for inspection (!) there will be all sorts of interesting things happening on both weekends (2pm) like an organic cooking demo and how to repurpose wine bottles. what is unique about this building is that one of the condos will be occupied by CPR - the center for performance research - an organization started by the two dance companies chez bushwick (from my neighborhood) and thin man dance. this partnership is meant to “improve the life of the performing arts community in bklyn” as the current real-estate boom threatens to wipe it out. it seems that greenbelt seeks to define sustainability not just within the terms of architecture, interior and product design but also within the terms of maintaining the artistic community that made it cool to live in williamsburg to begin with. bravo greenbelt… more info at www.greenbeltbrooklyn.com. also green drinks happening tonite at the greenbelt 361 manhattan ave. brooklyn… 7-9pm.

is swigg approved! last nite we went to the ‘taster’s party’ at the newest pizza place to open in our hood — that is the east williamsburg industrial park / bushwick / we-bu or whatever the kids are calling it these days — all i know is, as a veteran of the neighborhood for the past 11 years (yeah i’m old-school ya’ll), this is the best pizza you will find this side of the johnson-dickson line… no offense campus dwellers (!)
